National Organization for Marriage and Giant Umbrellas

In this post I would simply like to post an advertisement presented by a Christian organization against same-sex marriage. First, I just want to say that I am in no way implying that all Christians would even want to be associated with this commercial. This is merely an example of one product of religion that I absolutely detest. To lighten the mood somewhat, I have followed it up with a spoof.

  1. NOM is a catastrophe, and clearly something negative that comes out of religion. I think you should go deeper into the issue though. There was no analysis here. I'm guessing there wasn't really meant to be and you were just throwing this out for us all to see. Due to my personal bias Jews and gay people are my topics that I'm going to nag most about.

  3. Well. I'm Jewish, atheist, and I'm a lesbian. I'm basically just saying that because I'm Jewish and gay that I'll take more issue or have more comments about those posts because I have a personal connection to them. So when I see things about anything Jewish or a lack of postings about Judaism, or information that I think is incorrect, I'm going to bug you about it. I think in your future posts you should look up things about how the different Jewish movements look at gays. There's a whole variety. Look up "keshet" (Hebrew word for rainbow) and "Keshet Rabbis." There's all sorts of interesting crap out there.

I am always interested to hear what type of readers I have c: I'm assuming by Jewish atheist you mean you were raised Jewish and are a part of Jewish culture, etc., but don't actually believe in a god? I look forward to your comments regarding Judaism, and thank you for the post idea c:

  5. I'd like to second Ed's suggestion and extend it a little: it wouldn't hurt when talking about religions and their treatment of us to mention some of the religious groups that disagree with the treatment of gays.

  6. Again, I understand completely. This wasn't intended to be a very analytical post, I just wanted to present that particular ad. Additionally, it is hard to give any real generalization other than listing very specific sects of the Abrahamic religions and almost all non-Abrahamic religions. If I were to do this, how would you recommend I approach it?

  7. You're right about my Judaism. I have been raised that way and am part of Jewish culture but do not believe in God. I think it's fairly common actually, but some people find it a difficult concept to grasp.

    Also "taking the issue too far". A. Way to give some examples of that and B. Oh, you mean like what you're doing RIGHT NOW?
